The newly expanded Credit Union for NHS employees and their family members for Scotland and North England was launched on Tuesday 6th October 2009 at the Royal Infirmary < Edinburgh by the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing; Nicola Sturgeon.
Speaking at the launch; she said: “It is fantastic that we now have a credit union that is open to every member of NHS staff (in Scotland) and that really does chime perfectly with the philosophy of a mutual NHS because a mutual NHS is about lots of things; it’s about a publicly owned; publicly delivered health service that values its staff and it is also about a sense of community and a sense of family.”
More than 150;000 members of NHS staff and their families will now be eligible to join the NHS Credit Union; which is the first NHS staff credit union to operate on a Scotland
Three NHS Lothian staff members; Grace Forrest; Catherine Mill and Mary Sillence; were the first to join at the launch.
Grace; who is a nurse; said: “At this time of financial uncertainty; the security offered by the NHS Credit Union is a real comfort. I have chosen to sign up today because I know my money will work for me and will also help other NHS workers who are looking to borrow at an affordable rate.”
“I signed up today because it will help me and my family save on a regular basis. It’s also great that there are junior saver accounts for the children;” said Catherine; a domestic within NHS Lothian.
