More About The Credit Union

Our Credit Union began life in November 1998, following some 18 months work prior to that initiated by founder member Robert Rae in his role as UNISON Branch Secretary of the Southern General Hospital Branch. With the support of the trade union’s and the employer, Southern General NHS Trust, the original VOLUNTEERS set about establishing the Credit Union.

In the 12 years since, our Credit Union has grown steadily, reaching a number of landmarks along the way, from opening our office at the Southern General, employing our first staff member to developing beyond the boundaries of the Southern General to incrementally cover all the NHS employees and their family members across the whole of Scotland and the North of England.

As at January 2010 we have over 5,200 active members with a massive scope for growth and membership increase. It is the Board’s view that with all the new developments taking place, we will see that figure rise substantially over the next few years. We have also given out over £25million in member loans since 1998.

Over the next year Road Shows and publicity events will take place throughout the common bond are which will help expand the membership of the Credit Union. This includes recruiting and training additional volunteers and workplace representatives in order to promote our services and our message to as many people as possible. In order to provide day to day services in an efficient and effective way and to support the development of the Credit Union, we currently have 7 full time permanent members of staff led by our General Manager – Robert Kelly. All of our staff are based in our office in Dava Street, Govan.

All of these developments have been led by the Board of Directors who give their time FREE, to further the development of the Credit Union, and the staff who carry out the day to day operations.
